Changes to the AOTrauma Basic Principles of Fracture Mangement course for implementation from October 2018

Following the review of the AOTrauma Basic Principles course by the Residents Education Taskforce, and the approval by the AOTEC in 2017, the updated event framework and associated templates are now online. Modifications include new videos and instrumentation for practical exercises.

Changes to core and optional content are indicated in the course templates and faculty syllabus, and for the new or updated lectures, sample presentations are being added to the Faculty Center .

In addition to the lectures, a number of practical exercises have been revised, with new videos and instrumentation. Please find below an overview:

  • Updated video for "Internal fixation with screws and plates─absolute stability" (video 00139 )
  • There are now three options for applying a modular external fixator: on the tibia, an ankle spanning, or a knee spanning external fixator (videos 00116 , 00119 , 00120 respectively)
  • A new alternative for intramedullary fixation using the expert tibial nail enhanced (ETN Enhanced) (video 00136 )
  • Updated video for the management of a trochanteric fracture using a dynamic hip screw (video 00137 )
  • Updated video for the management of a type 44C malleolar fracture (video 00138). This exercise will now be performed with a Type C fracture only.
  • New alternative for intramedullary fixation using the expert retrograde/antegrade femoral nail (R/AFN) (video 00140 )

The modifications are ready for implementation and while there is a transition period for adopting the changes, all courses from October 2018 should incorporate the changes.
