Modifications to the AOTrauma Advanced Principles of Fracture Management course for implementation from October 2018

At their meeting in March 2018, the AOTEC has approved a number of changes to the Advanced Principles of Fracture Management course. The course framework has been updated and several practical exercises have been revised, with new videos and instrumentation.

A proposal to update the event framework was put forward to the AOTrauma Education Commission (AOTEC) by the Residents Education Taskforce in March 2018. The suggested changes were based on the results of a review of the AOTrauma Advanced Principles of Fracture Management course which involved analyzing the evaluation and assessment data from the last few years, along with feedback on the course by participants, faculty, and chairpersons.

The AOTEC has approved the following changes:

  • The optional lecture "Review of the principles of fracture management" is now core
  • The core lecture "(Proximal, distal, and segmental) tibial shaft fractures" is now optional
  • There is now a new optional lecture on the "Management of malunions"

In addition to the lectures, a number of practical exercises have been revised, with new videos and instrumentation. Please find below an overview:

  • A new option for the management of a distal femoral fracture (video 20246 )
  • A new option for the management of a bicondylar tibial plateau fracture (video
    20257)
  • An updated video for the management of a distal tibial fracture (video 20254 )
  • Two new options for the management of a distal humeral fracture
    (videos 20250 , 20251 )
  • Two new options for IM nailing of the femur (videos 20255 , 20256 )

The event framework and templates are available in the Faculty Center . Sample lectures and support packages for the new videos are continually being added to the Faculty Center.

The modifications are ready for implementation and while there is a transition period for adopting the changes, all courses from October 2018 should incorporate the changes.
