AOTrauma is pleased to announce updates to the orthogeriatrics curriculum: A new version of the course with anatomical specimen practicals is now available and the standard course program template has been updated. A new hospital-based education format has also been developed and an osteoporotic fracture care book recently published.

This year has brought a number of exciting highlights for AOTrauma in the field of orthogeriatric education.

Updated course program template

The Orthogeriatrics Education Taskforce consisting of Emilio Fantin (AR), Christian Kammerlander (DE), and Markus Gosch (Geriatrician, DE) updated the course program template and suggested the new course name “Fracture Care in Older Adults”, which has been approved by the AOTEC.

These changes have been successfully implemented at courses in Vienna, La Paz, Cartagena, and Dubai. At the same time, a faculty support package has been launched, providing cases for small group discussions, documentation for practical exercises, and documents to further support event Chairs. The package is available in the AOTrauma Faculty Center .

Alternative course format

A new version of the course with dissection and procedures on anatomical specimens, designed by Martin Hessmann (DE) and An Sermon (BE), is now available as an alternative to the standard course. The taskforce is in the process of adding supporting material for this type of event to the faculty support package.

New hospital-based events

To address some of the challenges in attracting surgeon and geriatrician participants to the 2-day course (eg, time away from practice, cost, inability of the team to attend), a new one-day hospital-based educational event has been created. It was piloted twice this year in hospitals in Copenhagen and Bogotá. The event is tailored to the needs of the hospital and involves the entire care team. Information is gathered by the visiting faculty prior to the event, analyzed together with the local faculty at the hospital, and a set of desired changes agreed upon.

Would you like to host this educational event in your department?

During 2019 and 2020, the Orthogeriatrics Education Taskforce would like to run this program once or twice per year in each region. Our local regional program contributors (RPCs) and faculty are getting prepared and we look forward to receiving your application to host an event (please use the link below and complete the questions with the help of your core team).

Note: the host hospital must cover the cost of the meeting room and food and refreshments for the faculty and participants.
