Faculty development now open to the entire AO network and beyond

The roll out of the Faculty Education Program to the AO network and external customers increases the reach and impact of the AO Foundation’s world class education, benefitting patients.

Since 2011, over 3’000 AO faculty members have become better medical educators by attending an AO Faculty Education Program (FEP) event . The AO Education Institute, together with deeply engaged surgeons from the AO Clinical Divisions and initiatives, continuously develop FEPs as an outstanding educational activity designed to empower AO faculty clinicians as they deliver world-class medical postgraduate education.

The AO’s FEP events have been central to building the AO Foundation’s reputation as an educational leader that promotes lifelong learning across its network. Building on the successful history of these FEPs and responding to strong and sustained interest among the AO community, the AO Foundation Board in 2018 agreed to an initiative that will open up FEP events.

Under this initiative, these events will now be open to external customers and organizations from the AO surgeons’ network such as universities, teaching hospitals, medical societies, associations, as well as healthcare companies.

In 2016 and 2017, the first two external FEPs were piloted at the McGill University Health Center and the University of Health Science at Houston.

A more comprehensive pilot program is already underway with the AO’s first external customer and cooperation partner Johnson & Johnson, and a wider roll out is expected in the second half of 2019.

As the AO celebrates its first 60 years, we wish to ensure its sustainability and continuing direct impact on patient outcomes through the AO Clinical Divisions and initiatives. This new initiative aims to reinforce the AO’s reputation as a world-renowned provider of medical education and to generate further funding for the AO and its mission.

As AO faculty members your work to support, guide, and further develop the AO’s education is key. As we move to expand the scope and reach of the FEP program, we want you to know how grateful we are for your continued dedication to the AO as a gold-standard educator.

We welcome your feedback and, as a first step, we invite you to let us know if you think your home institutions could benefit from FEPs.
