AOPEER―designed by surgeons, for surgeons

Status update and call to organize a face-to-face AOPEER course in your region

AO Program for Education and Excellence in Research (AOPEER) offers surgeons and researchers tools and training in clinical research through online material and face-to-face courses. This update informs you on how to organize an AOPEER face-to-face course in your region.

Status update:

In 2018, new content—a lecture on study design, an instructional video on informed consent and study conduct, an e-module on health economics, and a white paper on data protection—were published in AOPEER’s online platform. As an AO member, you have full access to all content on www.aopeer.org through the same login as for your AO membership. In addition, 14 Principles of Clinical Research courses have been conducted in 13 countries totaling more than 600 participants. Following the same design, new curricula (level-2 courses on publication writing, study management, grant writing, and data management) will be rolled out in 2019 and seven AOPEER face-to-face courses are already booked in the first half of the year.

Strategically, to showcase AOPEER and to develop teacher groups in all parts of the world, AOPEER courses are performed mainly in collaboration with the AO clinical divisions and the AOPEER backoffice during the developmental phase until the end of 2019. The focus for 2019 will be Europe and North America.

How to become an AOPEER teacher?

If you have experience in clinical research and at least one peer-reviewed publication, and if you are motivated to teach specific aspects of clinical research, please approach us for further information and opportunities to attend AOPEER courses including teacher seminars.

How to organize an AOPEER course in your region?

To bring an AOPEER face-to-face course to your region, please approach your Regional Research Committee (AOSpine and AOTrauma) or the Research Commission (AOCMF and AOVET) to discuss opportunities and available resources. An alternative is to bring an AOPEER course to your institution or region as a “cross-divisional” course funded by, for example, your institution, other organizations, independent sponsors, and/or the course participants. In this case, please approach the AOPEER backoffice directly to discuss organizational details and available slots.

The AOPEER Taskforce is now intensively discussing future needs in clinical research education. Further development of AOPEER into a true e-learning and virtual classroom is under consideration. Attracting third party clients is another focus this year and in the future. 2019 will be an important year for AOPEER.

You can help us make AOPEER a better product for you—please tell us about your needs, and all ideas are welcome.

Please direct all your questions and comments to aopeer@aofoundation.org .
