Meet the new AO Trauma Education Commission members

AO Trauma Global Education is pleased to introduce two new AO Trauma Education Commission members (AOTEC): Dr Saeed Al-Thani (AE) and Dr Reto Babst (CH).

Prof Dr Reto Babst is an orthopedic trauma surgeon. He has recently retired and works as senior consultant at the clinic for orthopedic and trauma surgery at the Luzerner Kantonsspital in Lucerne. In addition, he is the Head of the Medical Master Curriculum at the University of Lucerne and Leader of the Skills Lab at the Luzerner Kantonsspital. He is a member of several national and international trauma and emergency surgery societies and an honorary member of the Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Traumatologie und Versicherungsmedizin (SGTV), the Swiss society for traumatology and insurance medicine.

 

Babst first became involved with the AO in the early 1980s. He attended several courses as a participant and after a couple of years became an AO faculty member. Later, he became a course chairperson, member of the TK Expert Group, and finally was appointed a trustee. He has been a faculty member and chairperson for numerous national, regional and international AO courses and has been awarded several prizes for his achievements in education and in support of the AO TK System. Most recently, he was elected chairman of the AO Trauma Europe and Southern Africa Education Committee, succeeding Johnathan Monk (GB).

 

What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would choose the same profession. Iʼm still an enthusiastic orthopedic trauma surgeon and teacher.

 

What was your best learning experience within the past five years?

My best learning experience in the last five years was the Leader Education Program (LEP) course in Madrid, Spain.

 

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy sports like running, biking, and skiing.

 

What is your motto?

Never stop learning.

Dr Saeed Al-Thani is an orthopaedic surgeon in Dubai. After med school at King Faisal University, he went to Canada for his residency training at the University of Toronto and earned the Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) qualification in 2004. Currently, he works as consultant surgeon specializing in orthopedics, arthroscopy, sports medicine and joint reconstruction in Mediclinic City Hospital. Since 2013 he has been a medical director and owner of Orthocure Medical Center in Dubai. He is president of the Emirates Orthopedic Society and member of the Arab Board Orthopedic Examination Committee. In 2018, he succeeded Mahmoud Odat as chairperson of the  AO Trauma Middle East and Northern Africa Education Committee. He is a long-standing AO Trauma faculty member.
