New AO VET multiple-choice questions represent valuable learner evaluation tools

New AO VET multiple-choice questions (MCQs) for pre- and post-course assessment are already serving as valuable tools for increasing course participants’ engagement, evaluating pre-course learning needs and the impact of courses, and assessing regional learners’ needs in order to shape future course development.

Participants in AO VET’s competency-based small animal principles and advanced courses are already completing the MCQs, which were developed alongside the courses’ curricula.

The MCQs include ten pre-course and ten post-course questions, with two questions for each of the five core competencies identified through backward planning. Participants’ answers will help evaluate their ability to:

  • Evaluate animal patients with fractures
  • Select and plan appropriate treatment options
  • Perform operative and nonoperative procedures to treat long bone fractures
  • Formulate plans for postoperative care, including recognition and management of complication
  • Critically assess patient outcomes

Going forward, AO VET will develop and validate additional MCQs for equine courses and other established masters’ course.

The AO VET faculty members who contributed cases and questions as well as translation and validation support; AO Education Institute Curriculum Developer Michael Cunningham; AO VET North America Education Strategy Officer Chitra Subramaniam; the AO VET Education Commission; and AO VET Asia Pacific Chairperson Mark Glyde provided expert guidance for MCQ development.
