AO CMF underscores its multispecialty orientation with first two global events of 2021

With its first two global events of 2021, AO CMF underscores its multispecialty orientation and reasserts its purpose of promoting excellence in patient care and outcomes in craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery.

AO CMF AP and IAOO collaboration

The Global Oral Oncology and Reconstruction Symposium, a collaboration between AO CMF Asia Pacific (AO CMF AP) and the International Academy of Oral Oncology (IAOO), took place on March 19–20. This online symposium featured a 37-person, international faculty of experts from across the specialties: oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), plastic, head and neck, and ear nose and throat surgery. The event focused on two key themes: oncology on day 1 and technology in reconstruction on day 2.

Free and open access enabled hundreds to hear to the symposium’s keynote lectures and panel discussions on controversial topics.

Topics included management of skull base tumors, parapharyngeal space tumors, infratemporal fossa tumors and the controversies and consensus on neck dissection, advanced-stage oral cancer management challenges, salvage surgery, and recurrent oral cancer. Technology in reconstruction topics covered were Brown class III dentate mandible with floor of mouth squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) for reconstruction, virtual surgical planning, and Brown class II maxilla defect with alveolar SCC.

Course chairs Mike Leung and Richard Su and IAOO chairs are Richard Shaw and Moni Kuriakose report a fantastic success and would like to thank all faculty involved with this project.

The Traveling Mandible

AO CMF extends its online educational portfolio with this unique May 29 relay event responding to regional needs and covering all aspects of the mandible during a nonstop, 24-hour educational experience delivered by renowned AO CMF faculty.

Lead surgeon faculty organizing the event are AO CMF Community Development Commission Chair Sabine Girod (United States) and Marcelo Figari (Argentina), both of whom are leading experts with the AO CMF Online Campus.

With the relay format, the event will rotate through various hubs and time zones worldwide: Palo Alto, United States; Hong Kong; New Delhi, India; Cairo, Egypt; Zürich, Switzerland; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Bogotá, Colombia and Buenos Aires, Argentina. Each hub/time zone will have an allocated four-hour slot, allowing delivery of four online, live expert case discussions. Each case discussion will include a presentation and one or two case discussions featuring speakers and two moderators from the respective geographic hub.

The event features a vast range of mandible topics, including classification and basic principles of fracture management, bone replacement, edentulous mandible fractures, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and idiopathic juvenile TMJ atrophy, precision implants, current treatment of cystic lesions in the mandible, oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) treatments, reconstruction, osteoradionecrosis, and antiresorptive drug-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ).
