New educational research publications available from clinical divisions and AO Education Institute

Surgeons from AO CMF and AO Trauma have collaborated with the AO Education Institute to publish two new articles in peer-reviewed journals.

The articles describe two competency-based curriculum courses and analyze their evaluation data.

In the article “Evaluating an International Facial Trauma Course for Surgeons: Did We Make a Difference?” AO Education Institute intern Ayesha Younas, MHPE, and coauthors analyzed pre- and post-course evaluations of 86 AO CMF management of facial trauma courses conducted worldwide in 2017–2019. The data suggest that the course was relevant across different specialties, cultures, and countries. The results also indicate that this course met the audience needs and enabled participants to plan changes in their clinical practice.

In the article “Design, delivery, and evaluation of seminars and hands-on courses worldwide on intraoperative imaging in orthopedic trauma,” Sven Yves Vetter, MD, AO Trauma faculty, and coauthors described the competency-based curriculum approach for the creation of this educational activity. In addition, the authors analyzed pre- and post-course evaluations of 17 seminars and 6 courses delivered worldwide in 2014–2020. The data suggest that participants of all experience levels can benefit from training in imaging and that the knowledge gaps (difference between desired level and present level of ability) can be reduced by both teaching experiences (seminar and course).
