AOTrauma ORP started with hospital-based education in 2015. Since then, the number of Clinical Training Modules run every year in hospitals around the world has almost tripled.

Engagement, motivation, and personalization are important factors influencing the learning process. With the Clinical Training Modules (CTM), AOTrauma ORP found a way to facilitate these elements in their educational offerings. The CTMs are short educational sessions (up to 3h30) used to support ORP with their continuing nursing education at the point of care, and delivered by at least one AOTrauma faculty member, usually in their own hospital.  The CTMs are highly interactive activities with alternating lectures, reflection sessions, discussions, and demonstrations. Advantages of in-hospital training include reduced costs, reduced or no travel time, use of local language, and that faculty are familiar with the educational needs of the participants, as well as their fellow workers, with whom they collaborate on a daily basis.

Today, AOT ORP offers five competency-based CTM sets, prepared by the ORP Education Taskforce and aligned with the ORP curriculum. Modules are available in English and Dutch, with additional language versions currently in preparation. Since their introduction in 2015, the number of CTMs held each year in different parts of the world has almost tripled.

No. of Clinical Training Modules (CTM) and no. of participants per year:2015: 13 CTMs/242 participants2017: 35 CTMs planned (Jan-Oct 2017: 28 CTMs/423 participants) Available CTM modules:1. Introduction (bone healing, principles of fracture fixation, reduction techniques)2. Osteosynthesis with plate and screws3. Osteosynthesis with intramedullary nail4. Osteosynthesis with tension band wire and external fixator5. Osteosynthesis of the proximal femur Prerequisites for running a CTM:At least one faculty must be an active AOT faculty member CTM particpants (country/year):

After three years, we now know what participants and faculty value most about the Clinical Training Modules and several best practices have been identified:

  • Participants appreciate the possibility to learn about the principles and relate them to their environment
  • Faculty find it easy to adjust the CTM content to the level of knowledge and skills of the participants
  • Close collaboration of well-prepared faculty and the staff responsible for continuing education in the hospital leads to the best outcome
  • A maximum of two CTMs should be run per day
  • The suggested number of participants per module is 8-12, as experience shows the best outcomes can be achieved in small groups

The growing number of CTMs held each year means there is a requirement for additional faculty training and support. A good way of introducing a larger group of faculty to CTMs was found in Belgium in April this year, where under the lead of Prof. A Sermon and D Beckers, the Universitair Ziekenhuis Gasthuisberg Leuven organized their first CTM and invited the Flemish speaking AOT ORP faculty to their event. This allowed them to familiarize themselves with the format of CTMs and pick up many tips and best practices for organizing and running CTMs effectively. Directly after the event, it was decided to organize two additional CTMs in other hospitals in Belgium.

As AOTrauma stands for quality education delivered by well-trained faculty, two faculty trainings will be organized for ORP this year:

  • AOTrauma Faculty Education Program in Asia Pacific
    (Oct 2017, Hong Kong)
  • AOTrauma Faculty Training in Europe (Dec 2017, Davos)

The participants of these events will learn how to teach effectively and facilitate individual learning as Faculty in AOTrauma ORP courses and CTMs. For 2018, one faculty training for ORP is planned.
