Meet the new members of the AOTrauma Education Commission

AOTrauma Global Education is pleased to introduce the new members of the AOTrauma Education Commission (AOTEC): Jonathan Monk (UK) and Michael Sirkin (US). Learn more about these individuals in these short biographies and their answers to a mini-questionnaire.

Jonathan Monk is an orthopedic surgeon in Surrey with a practice based at Ashford and St Peter’s Hospitals, the Princess Margaret Hospital in Windsor, and the Runnymede Hospital. He is dual fellow, trained in trauma and lower limb arthroplasty, and specializes in lower limb surgery.

For the last four years he has run one of the largest trauma conferences held in the UK, the London Trauma Symposium. He is a member of the AOT Ireland Council and the Chairman of the AOTrauma Europe Education Committee. He is a long-standing member of the AO faculty and participated in the first AO Leader Education Program in April 2017.

Dr Monk, what is your main goal in AOTEC?

One of my tasks in the AOTEC will be to represent the European courses and I want to do this to the best of my ability. One of the things that we are currently working hard to achieve in Europe is nurturing the best possible faculty. At the European General Assembly, we decided to set-up a 1-day course designed to develop the philosophy of training, for example, optimizing coaching techniques, performance excellence, and the psychological aspect of being a surgeon. This exciting project is called "A Lifetime in Surgery" and will be trialed in Madrid in May 2018.

What are your hobbies?

I was very fortunate when I was younger to be trained as a classical musician so I spend quite a lot of time doing this and also playing golf.

What is your most marked characteristic?

In golf the complete inability to execute a high fade!

What is your motto?

When the going gets tough the tough guys have lunch!

Dr Michael Sirkin is an orthopedic surgeon and a Vice Chairman, Professor, and Co-Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at New Jersey Medical School. His current practice focuses on orthopedic trauma and he has a special interest in the treatment of osteomyelitis.

Dr Sirkin is a member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Within the AO Foundation, Dr Sirkin is a long-standing member of AONA faculty. He is currently the chair of the AONA TEC, and a member of the AOTrauma North America Board. In this role, he oversees educational activities in AOTrauma North America and represents his region in the AOTEC.

Dr Sirkin, what profession other than your own would you like to attempt?

I would have liked to become a chef and own a restaurant.

What quality do you most admire in a great teacher/instructor/coach?

The ability to listen and not be threatened by those you are mentoring, teaching, or coaching.

What are your hobbies?

I enjoy golf, fishing, and eating.

What is your most marked characteristic?

Enthusiasm.

What is your motto?

No good deed goes unpunished.

Thank you

AOTrauma thanks Dr Monk and Dr Sirkin for their commitment and wishes them a very successful tenure in the AOTrauma Education Commission.
