The most important feature of the practical exercises comes from the hands-on experience that the learner receives. For this exercise to be successful, the table instructor needs to be readily available to reinforce the correct procedure and provide constructive feedback.
2
KNOW THE LEARNERS
By knowing your audience, you can adapt your teaching style to become most suitable for the learners' needs. Study the precourse assessment and/or talk to your chairperson to find out how to teach this specific audience most efficiently.
3
INTRODUCE YOURSELF
Learners want to know who instructs them and how to address you. Therefore, at the beginning of your practical exercise you should share with them briefly who you are.
4
ASK THE LEARNERS TO INTRODUCE THEMSELVES
Please also ask your learners to introduce themselves in order to understand their backgrounds and to create a friendly learning atmosphere.
5
REINFORCE THE DEMONSTRATION
Before the learners start the hands-on exercise, explain the learning objectives and different steps that are performed. Make sure that no one starts to play around with the instruments before you have finished your explanation.
6
ALLOW THE PARTICIPANTS TO PERFORM THE SKILL
During the practical exercise, allow the participants to learn on their own. Avoid giving mini-lectures or interfering extensively unless it is necessary.
7
GIVE APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK
Use the Feedback Guidelines during practical exercises to provide feedback to the participants. Make sure the feedback relates to the learning objectives and defined outcomes, reinforces the learning experience, and is not judgmental.
8
MANAGE THE LEARNERS
All participants can benefit from a practical exercise if the table instructors manage their learners. Direct disruptive or monopolizing learners, silence the chatterboxes, engage the silent learners, and make sure that everybody “stays on time”.
9
A PRACTICAL EXERCISE IS TEAMWORK
Talk to the other table instructors and the practical director in advance to ensure that all participants are on the same page and following the script. Avoid undermining a practical exercise and refrain talking to other faculty members during the practical exercise.
10
SUMMARIZE KEY LEARNING POINTS
At the end of the practical exercise, summarize the steps of the procedure that have been completed and refer to the learning objectives.
10 tips for
table instructors
1
BE THE EXPERT
It is important that you, the table instructor, are the expert in the practical exercise. In order to become an expert, you have to familiarize yourself with the procedure, watch the demonstration video, and acquaint yourself with the equipment. Furthermore, you will need to practice explaining and demonstrating each section and try to identify themes that might create a link between the exercise and other parts of your course.
