AOTrauma/AORecon - Curriculum for Periprosthetic Fractures

Joint development of a curriculum and educational events in the area of managing periprosthetic fractures.

The AO Foundation has established a curriculum committee to implement a competency-based approach to our education in the area of periprosthetic fracture management. This curriculum is being jointly developed by surgeon experts from reconstructive surgery (through AORecon faculty) and orthopedic trauma (through AOTrauma faculty). The goal is to create a framework for the development of high quality educational events for this topic, along with faculty support materials (eg, templates, cases), learning resources, and assessment instruments.

The members of the curriculum committee are Mark Reilly (Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, US), Karl Stoffel (Dep of Orthopaedics and Traumatology KSBL and University of Basel, Switzerland), Gijs van Hellemondt (Sint Maartenskliniek, Netherlands), and Luigi Zagra (Istituto Ortopedico Galeazzi IRCCS, Italy). The committee's initial work is funded by the AO Foundation and the events are co-sponsored by AOTrauma and AORecon.

The group developed a full competency-based curriculum based on patient outcomes to address daily practice problems and performance gaps. They designed a 2-day event, the AORecon/AOTrauma Course—Comprehensive Periprosthetic Fracture Management of the Hip and Knee: Fracture Fixation and Revision Arthroplasty. The target audience is senior, experienced consultant (practicing) surgeons and the first course takes place during Davos Courses in December 2017. The course consists of 5 modules and features practical exercises and structured cases for group discussions. The committee will analyze all the outcomes and propose a plan for the future.
