Welcome to the spring 2017 edition of AOTrauma's FacultyFocus.

Since being elected as the AOTrauma Education Commission (AOTEC) Chairperson, I have been setting goals and familiarizing myself with the most pressing issues.

I am pleased to announce that AOTrauma is launching 2 new competency-based curricula: Foot and Ankle and Pediatrics. As a result of a multi-year process and intensive work of the respective Education Taskforces (ETFs), chairpersons and faculty now have a framework at hand to help them design events that address learners' needs based on a set of defined competencies.

Furthermore, AOTrauma together with AORecon are, based on a general interest in reconstructive surgery, collaborating to create a Periprosthetic Fracture Management Course.

Ever since the AO started conducting courses, the one thing that distinguished AO courses from others was the practical sessions and the chance to give our participants the opportunity to practice with their hands. We have realized the importance of hands-on activities for our participants and also realized the tremendous advances in the field of simulation. We are also now working on taking our practicals to the next level, to give our participants a better experience, and to help them be more competent at what they do so they can perform at a higher level and improve the patient’s experience.

We are excited about the future and the possibilities it holds for our educational activities.
