New AO Trauma Online Course—Basic Principles of Fracture Management Essentials

Residents’ education is fundamental to achieving the AO's mission of improving patient care. In response to the cancellation of many of the face-to-face Basic Principles of Fracture Management courses, the AO Trauma residents education taskforce developed an online course with a guided pathway, allowing residents to acquire the entire knowledge portion of the basic principles course and to develop procedural knowledge using Touch Surgery modules for practical exercises.

AO Trauma Online Course—Basic Principles of Fracture Management Essentials

Availability and target audience: orthopedic trauma residents worldwide
Developed by the AO Trauma residents education taskforce

A self-paced four-week course is being piloted with invited participants from all of AO Trauma’s regions and will be closely monitored and evaluated by AO Trauma residents education taskforce members.

"We have all been anticipating the migration to digital distance learning to improve accessibility for learners everywhere," says Mark Lee (United States), who developed this new course offering together with AO Trauma residents education taskforce colleagues Khairul Mohammad (Malaysia) and Ingmar Buffo (Mexico). "This change represents an important response to the needs of our modern learners—high- quality, on-demand content based on the most up-to-date information. The AO has long led the way with the reference standard for face-to-face and hands-on teaching. I look forward to participating in the development of the best digital learning platforms to optimize our new vision of training the next generation of fracture care providers."

This online course does not replace the traditional face-to-face basic principles course but primarily provides the knowledge component of the curriculum, explains Mohammad.

"This course is a transition between the traditional face-to-face basic principles course and the blended course version. The blended version of the basic principles course strategizes the use of animated presentations, case-based scenarios, questions and answers, and intramodule assessments to deliver information interactively. The blended version of the basic principles course will then be able to focus and intensify the face-to-face aspect of the basic principles course by allowing more in-depth discussion and practical experiences."

The AO Trauma Online Course—Basic Principles of Fracture Management Essentials will be rolled out to the global community soon to help surgeons learn and enhance their skills during this “new normal” and beyond. Highest learning quality is guaranteed thanks to AO Trauma's best-in-class curriculum, and its international faculty guiding participants through the course.
